Electro-Optical Targeting System

The electro-optical targeting system is a system employed to track and locate targets in aerial warfare.electro-optical targeting system The system is comprised of charge-coupled device TV cameras, laser rangefinders and laser designators. The global market for the electro-optical targeting systems is growing due to increasing attacks that require visual images for quick decision making by armed forces. In addition, rising military spending in various countries, and shifting focus to miniaturization of the systems for easier transportation in aircraft are boosting growth of this market.

Electro-optical Targeting Systems (EOTS) provide the critical targeting, surveillance and situational awareness capabilities needed to support the mission of any military platform. These platforms may include aircraft, ships, ground vehicles, UAVs and many others. The EOTS provides the commander and crew with a clear view of their battlespace to perform their missions.

Unlike radar, which uses transmitted energy to illuminate the target and identify it, EO sensors are passive and use the energy emitted or reflected from the target itself to determine its location. The EOTS sensor is able to detect objects of interest such as enemy personnel and equipment even in thick smoke, dense dust or obscurants.

Despite their relatively recent entry into the battlefield, EO targeting systems have become an important part of a gunship crew's arsenal. The first serious application was the Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) systems used during the VietNam war to provide night vision for gunship crews. Since then, a wide range of EO targeting systems have been developed and integrated into gunships and other combat vehicles.

The latest advancement in EOTS is the Advanced EOTS, which will be a Block 4 upgrade for the F-35, to replace the current Enhanced EOTS (EOTS). The new and improved AOTS features short-wave infrared, high-definition television, an infrared marker and superior image detector resolution than the baseline EOTS. These upgrades will allow the F-35 to perform a wider variety of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and strike missions.

Raytheon's Multi-Spectral Targeting System (MTS) combines electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR), laser illumination and laser designation in a single sensor package. It has been used in over four million operational flight hours and supports a wide range of U.S. military, civilian and allied missions around the world. The AN/AAQ-30 MTS is a combat proven, all-weather, all-environment, day and night targeting and fire control system that delivers precise, mission-critical intelligence information to the pilot and commander.

The MK 20 shipboard EO/IR system is an integral part of the Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, Ticonderoga-class cruisers and Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters. It integrates the latest technologies into a compact, low-cost shipboard EO/IR solution that maximizes situational awareness and tactical effectiveness for Naval Gun Weapon System (GWS) targeting, surveillance, and target acquisition. The system provides multi-sensor electro-optical imaging capability, a video datalink, and J-series coordinates for targeting and designation. It also incorporates an advanced servo mechanism that meets Grade A shock requirements. The advanced servo mechanism provides precision servo control, with bandwidth reserve to ensure mission configuration flexibility.
